After graduting from Fairfield High School,Foster worked for a year at a steel mill in Birmingham, to earn money to go to Auburn. He worked part time as a short-order cook, while in college, but,after 2 years,could no longer afford the tuition. He then joined the Navy during the Korean Conflict, and served in a Marine hospital in Japan. After 6 years in the Navy, he was honorably discharged, and returned to Auburn on the G I Bill.
Following his graduation, he went to work at University (now UAB) Hospital in Birmingham, planning to enroll in the new MA program in Hospital Administration, when it opened. I was working in the Chemistry lab, having completed Medical Technology School there, the previous year.
We met while bowling in the hospital league,and began dating. We were married in 1962, and moved to Iowa City, for Foster to earn his Master's Degree at the University of Iowa - he had just enough G I Bill left for the academic year.
We returned to Birmingham, where our only daughter, Valerie Joan, was born. He was so proud of her! Foster was able to meet her future husband, John C Gsell, at Thanksgiving, 1999, and he would have loved our wonderful grandchildren, Ian Foster and Olivia May Gsell. We talk about "Papa Foster" to them, so they will know about their grandfather. Jerri
