James was the son of William M. Calfee and Landona Penelope Johnson. He married Irene Clifford, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael M. Clifford of Bluefield on May 13, 1904. They divorced two years later, and he married Aileen Anna Jamotton.
He began his career as a conductor of the Pocahontas Division, then became a deputy sheriff in McDowell Co., WV. By 1920, they were living in Eckman, WV, and he ran (and lost) for the Republican nomination for Assessor of McDowell County. James was a detective with the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, a security company composed of agents and guards for the railroads and coal mines. Coal operators employed them to cope with disturbances, especially strikes, at the mines and in mining camps.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon for James W. Calfee, 57, widely known former resident of Bluefield, who died at 11:30 o'clock Wednesday night at his home in Eckman. The services will be held at the Eckman Methodist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. G.T. Jordon, the pastor, assisted by the Rev. W. S. Barbery of Crumpler and the Rev. Ben Johnson, pastor of the First Christian Church of Bluefield. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery on the Bluefield-Bramwell Road. Mr. Calfee was a victim of heart disease. Although he had suffered repeated attacks, none had appeared serious. Leaving his home early Wednesday night, Mr. Calfee was stricken suddenly while he walked along the streets of Eckman. Mr. Calfee was widely known and highly esteemed, was a member of the Methodist Church, a Mason, Shriner, Elk, Odd Fellow and member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was married March 9, 1914, at Eckman to Miss Aileen Jamotton. He is survived by his wife and four children, James, Ann, Billie and Mary Jane, all of Eckman; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Calfee, 1916 Walton Avenue, this city; two sisters, Mrs. W.F.
