MILLPORT, Ala. - James P. Beard, 69, died Jan. 26, 2007, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services are today at 2 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home Chapel with Sonny McLellan officiating. Burial will follow at Christian Chapel Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Beard was born March 9, 1937, to the late Dupree and Erdie Miller Beard. He was a member of Millport Church of Christ. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and received two Presidential Citations for his service during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He owned and operated Millport Machine Shop and Beard's Bargain Store and taught metal trades at the Lamar County Vo-Tech Center. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, J.B. Beard. He is survived by his wife, Vaudine Woolbright Beard of Millport, Ala.; brothers, Almus Beard of Hueytown, Ala., Ellis Beard of Fayetteville, N.C., Vadus Beard of Lipscomb, Ala., and J.T. Beard of Millport, Ala.; and sisters, Clairee Smallwood and Gaila Rainwater, both of Millport, Ala., and Nell Taylor of Vernon, Ala. Pallbearers are Duin and Terry Woolbright, J.C. Lindsey, Steve Curry, Vadus Beard Jr., Terrell Beard and Rodger Watkins.
