Mary Etta Pruett Whitener, 95 of Short Road, Hickory died Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Brian Center East. Born September 12, 1914 in Burke County, NC , she was the daughter of the late George Washington & Sarah Luellen Canipe Pruett. Mary was a member of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church on Startown Road in Hickory & was married to the late John Lawrence Whitener for over 40 years.

A daughter; Sarah Jane Whitener of Hickory, three sons; George Lawrence Whitener of Hickory, Frank L. Whitener of Hickory, Charles R. Whitener of Hickory; four grand-children, six great grand-children and a number of nieces & nephews survive her.

In addition to her husband, four brothers and five sisters preceded her in death.

A Celebration of Mary's life and Worship Service will be 2:00 pm Monday, November 23, 2009 at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church on Startown Road. The Rev. Randall Cauble will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 pm, prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
