Teralina Fernille was born in Norway on May 11, 1840. She was one of the first females baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints beyond the Arctic Circle.
Teralina left with her sweetheart, Peter Andrew Hartvigsen, and other members of his family to emigrate to America. They left Norway on a coast steamer, crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a sailboat. This was a northern route not crossed by Mormon emigrants before. They spent eleven hard weeks on the ocean, and landed in Canada.
From Canada, they took a steamer up the St. Lawrence River for some distance, then went by rail to Florence, Nebraska. Here, Teralina and Peter were married on July 18, 1864, by Patriarch John Smith.
Upon their arrival in Florence they found that the Mormon emigrant train had left. A man named Christofferson from Sanpete County, Utah, was fitting up a freighting outfit for Utah. He told them if they would buy a wagon and oxen they could cross the Plains with him. They arrived in Salt Lake City, the first part of October, 1864. After resting a few days, they traveled to Hyrum, Cache County, to make their home.
Teralina was a small woman and was lame, one leg being shorter than the other. She gave birth to six girls and one boy in eight years, the last two girls being twins.
Teralina passed away in childbirth on January 16, 1876, at the age of thirty-five. The baby died also and the sex of the child is not known.
Teralina was a valiant woman to leave her family and homeland to follow her sweetheart and the Chruch and come to Zion. Her gift to the world was her children.
Her descendants appreciate her many sacrafices; a true pioneer woman of faith and fortitude.
