Hickory - Houston Donnell Havnaer, 81, of Hickory, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Catawba Regional Hospice.
Donnell, a longtime resident of Hickory and retired educator, was born in Lincoln Co., Nov. 26, 1933 to the late Houston Sr. and Kathryn Whitener Havnaer. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Eli Poovey.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley; brother, Richard A. Havnaer and wife, Wyndie of Fort Mill, South Carolina; sister, Donna H. Houck and husband, Robert of Zionville, North Carolina; son Richard Havnaer and wife, Melanie of Woodland Park, Colorado; daughters, Melanie Blake and Lisa Poovey of Hickory, North Carolina; grandchildren, Heather Blake and significant other Jackson Pethtal of Charlotte, North Carolina, Zachery Morrison and wife, Leah of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Christopher Morrison and wife Saule of Corpus Christi, Texas, Drew Poovey and significant other Nicole Adams of Kannapolis, North Carolina, Gabrielle Blake and significant other, Quinton Cunningham of Vale, North Carolina, Dorian Teller and husband, Jake of Divide, Colorado, Haley Havnaer of Corpus Christi, Texas and great-grandchildren, Anthony Poovey of Kannapolis, North Carolina; Azyiah Cunningham of Vale, North Carolina, Eve and Lucy Morrison of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was also blessed with a large extended family and circle of friends.
Donnell was an Eagle Scout and spent many years as a life guard and water safety instructor at the Hickory Community/Foundation Center. He most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A receiving will be held at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 25. A private interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658; or the charity of choice.
