Joseph manufactured pianos for a living. He worked for the Winter Piano Company and while I am not sure of the history, it appears Winter made J.T. Brooks Pianos as well. His brother Robert James Brooks worked for him at some point.

Joseph Thomas Brooks of 202 Bell street died at his residence in Scarsdale on Saturday, May 5. after a short illness. Funeral services were conducted at the Brooks residence on Monday evening by the Rev. Alan R. Chalmers, . rector of the Church of St. James the Less. The burial service took place in Woodlawn Cemetery on Tuesday. Mr. Brooks, who was in his seventy-sixth year, had made his home in Scarsdale for the past six years. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. William H. Bentley of the same address and Mrs. Charles Browning of Highland, California.
