A graduate of Purdue University where he met his future wife, Margaret LaHue, the couple were married in Louisville on 11 Jan 1923.
They were the parents of one child, James B. Sturgis Jr., who was killed in action during Word War II.
The family had resided for many decades at 2610 Landor Avenue in Louisville's Strathmoor neighborhood. James was an elder at Strathmoor Presbyterian Church and a member of the Woodhaven Country Club.
He was survived by his wife, all his other relations having predeceased him.
