PFC Willie Howard Hawkins Jr, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Jacksonville, North Carolina.

Private First Class Willie Howard Hawkins Jr was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, PFC Hawkins served our country until August 27th, 1970 in Hua Nghia, South Vietnam. He was 22 years old and was not married. It was reported that Willie died when his weapon malfunctioned. His body was recovered. Willie was born on August 14th, 1948 in Chattanooga Tenn. PFC Hawkins is on panel 07W, line 016 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

The high school that he graduated from was in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At the time of his death he was survived by his mother Juanita Bray ( now deceased), two brother Albert Smith and Michael Bray (both now deceased), four sisters LaVerne Rountree & husband Luther, Carol Bray, Sundra Pitts and Gigi Bray. A sister in law, Linda Smith and a brother in law Phillip Pitts, two nephews, Myron and Byron Smith and a niece, Veronica Rountree.

Willie (Petey) was a loving and caring person who loved his family and country very much. He was a typical boy growing up who did things to aggravate his sisters. He played football in school and was a good friend to many of his school mates.

He served with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, "Golden Dragons", 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Army Commendation Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
