L. Andrew "Andy" Cumbie, a retired Navy Captain who served in World War II and Korea, died Monday at Heritage Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Leesburg, Virginia. He was 96.

Andy was born in Macon, Georgia. He received a bachelor's degree from Mercer University in 1947 and continued his studies at the University of Hawaii.

He served in the Navy for over 30 years and was deployed on the USS Yorktown in the Western Pacific, the USS Valley Forge in Korea and the USS Randolph in the Mediterranean. In addition, Andy served in Charleston, SC, Miramar, CA, Barber's Point, HI, Omaha, NE and Washington, DC. He retired from the Navy in 1974.

Prior to moving to Leesburg in 1999, Andy lived in Vienna, Virginia for 22 years. Learning to ski later in life, Andy enjoyed spending time at Bryce Mountain in Basye, Virginia. He was also a dedicated member of the Leesburg Rotary for more than a decade.

Andy is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Marilyn Cumbie; their two children: Robert Cumbie of Atlanta, Georgia and Benjamin Cumbie of Groton, Massachusetts; and four grandchildren.

Interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
