Doug Birkhead, 58, died on Monday, July 29, 2002 at his home in Salt Lake City. He was born on April 3, 1944 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the son of Herbert Cecil and Eugenia McChesney Birkhead. He graduated from Tulane University with a B.A. in political science in 1966. Doug served as a Captain and Public Affairs Officer in the United States Air Force from 1967-1971. He earned an M.A. in journalism from the University of South Carolina in 1974. In 1982, he was awarded a Ph.D. in journalism and mass communications from the University of Iowa. He taught at Louisiana State University from 1982 to 1986. Since 1986, he has been a member of the faculty of the Department of Communication at the University of Utah. Doug Birkhead was an accomplished and generous scholar and teacher, much loved and respected by his colleagues and students. Comments on his teaching over the years reflect great appreciation for Doug's passion for the subject, rigorous standards, skill and sensitivity in dealing with people, and care and concern for his students. One of these students recently remarked that she hoped she taught "in a manner reminiscent of you," affirming that his legacy will continue through those he has influenced. He was well known for his considerate comments and kind advice. Colleagues at the department valued his "quiet and thoughtful wisdom." He published extensively in the area of mass media, culture and society and was especially known for his seminal work in media ethics. Doug's integrity and selflessness was evident in his life as well as in the manner in which he faced this most recent challenge. His example of ethical living inspired and shaped the conduct of those close to him. Doug is survived by his wife, Ceres; his son, Christopher, an Air Force Captain serving in Oklahoma City; his granddaughter, Catherine; his mother and brothers, Dave and John of Colorado Springs and Roy of Japan. His father preceded him in death. We express our profound gratitude to the many friends who offered their support and prayers throughout his illness. We wish to thank the staff at the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center and at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. We deeply appreciate the care provided by the Community Nursing Services team, with special thanks to Jennifer Shaw and Alesia Black. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 2 at 5:00 p.m. at the Art Barn, 54 South Finch Lane.
