Charles Elmer Abbe


Funeral services were held Apr. 4 for Charles Elmer Abbe, 73, who died suddenly Apr. 1. Services were at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Monrovia. Interment was at Live Oak Memorial Park.


Mr. Abbe had lived in Sierra Madre for 45 years.


He was born Feb. 4, 1913 in Mora, Minn. to Charles John and Alice Marie Grummons Abbe. He was the grandson of Frederick Abbe who came to the United States in 1857 from Mullverstadt, Germany.


Mr. Abbe attended schools in Minnesota, graduating in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1936. Later he received his MBA from Cal State, Los Angeles.


He retired in 1974 from the city of Pasadena Department of Finance. He had worked for such companies as California Institute of Technology, Aerojet General Corp and North American Rockwell.


Mr. Abbe and his wife, Helga, came to Sierra Madre in 1941{*}. He was active in Little League and many other civic activities in earlier years. He was also instrumental in the refurbishing of Lizzie's Tavern.


Mrs. Abbe died Feb. 2, 1984.


Survivors include sons, Winifred [Winfield] J. Abbe of Athens, Ga., Karl F. Abbe of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and daughters, Jeannie Huapaya of Oxnard and Raya Hilander of Huntington Beach. Six grandchildren also survive.


The family requests that friends who wish to give a memorial might want to remember donations to the Helga Paulson [Paulsen] Abbe Memorial at the Sierra Madre Library.
