He inherited the estate from his 2nd wife, Wilhelmina Busch Woods. Upon his death, he left the estate to his first wife, Mrs. Milada Paula Woods of Santa Barbara, Calif., their daughter, Mrs. Katie Rose McClendon, and four relatives.

His first wife was Kate Rose Anderson 1892-1918. She had one daughter Katie Rose Woods. In 1930 she lived with Kate Anderson.

Sam as a diplomat before and during WWII was also involved in collecting intelligence through a network of contacts. He was instrumental in gathering information on the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and nuclear technology. On November 6, 1946, he was awarded the Medal of Freedom Award, one of the two highest civilian awards in the United States.

There is a book about Sam's intelligence work. It's titled, Two Against Hitler: Stealing the Nazis' Best-Kept Secrets. By John Van Houten Dippel.

Inscription

Buried on Lake Starnberg, in the park of Schloss Höhenried. Marble sarcophagus of Wilhelmine Busch-Woods, the builder of the castle, and her husband Sam Edison Woods on a plateau above the shores of Lake Starnberg. They carry the inscription: "Love never ends".
