Andrew E.N. Powers of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of his father, John Elias Hern. He died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, in his Duluth home after a battle with cancer. He was 54.

John was born in Bartlesville, Okla. The family moved to Cherry, Minn., when John was four years old. John graduated from the Cherry High School and St. Cloud State with a degree in Physical Education. John retired from the US Army National Guard as Lt. Colonel. He served as a company commander on the Iron Range as well as a training officer for Officer Candidate School at Ft. Snelling. John served in the Armor Division. John was sales manager for 50 Below. For over 30 years, John was successful in insurance sales to include Northwestern National Life and the Equitable, winning numerous national awards. John was a member of Euclid Lodge 198 A.F. and A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Duluth, AAD Temple Shrine and president and Drum Major of it's Pipes and Drums Unit; past Monarch of M.O.V.P.E.R. Ela Ala Grotto; past District Administrator, coach and umpire for the area Little League.

John is preceded in death by his father in 1991; and his mother in 2003.

Survivors also include his wife, Kathleen 'Kathy' Ann; children, Nicholas J. Hern of St. Paul, Brianne C. Hern of Duluth, John D. (Tara) Young, Jr. of Delaware, Ohio, Garrett W. Young of Duluth, Bryan D.R. Powers of Duluth, and a grandson, John D. Young III of Delaware, Ohio.

Burial will be in Black Hammer, Minn.
