Rev. J. H. Freel, 76, Florence Pastor, Dies
Northampton – Services for Rev. John H. Freel, 76, pastor of Annunciation Church in Florence who died in Providence Hospital Sunday, will be in Annunciation Church Thursday with a pontifical high mass at 10 a.m. The office of the dead will be chanted in the church at 9.30.
Fr. Freel, named pastor of the Florence church in 1946, had celebrated his 50th anniversary in the priesthood on Dec. 23, 1966.
Special Mass for Children
Fr. Freel's body will be at the Annunciation rectory at 42 Beacon St., Florence, today, with calling hours from 2 to 9. He will be carried in solemn procession to Annunciation Church Wednesday at 3 p.m., where he will lie in state until the pontifical funeral mass Thursday morning.
A special mass will be celebrated for children of the parish in the church Thursday at 8 a.m.
Prior to coming to Annunciation Church, Fr. Freel had served as assistant pastor at St. Joseph's Church, Pittsfield, St. Anne's in Lenox, St. John's in Worcester and St. Mary's in Westfield, and served as chaplain to the House of the Good Shepherd from 1931 to 1936.
Pastor in Turners Falls
He assumed his first pastorate at St. Mary's Church in Turners Falls, serving from 1936 to 1946, when he was assigned to Florence.
Fr. Freel organized the Catholic Woman's Council of the parish shortly after his appointment as pastor and was keenly interested in the Boy and Girl Scout troops of the parish. The Boy Scout troop erected a camp in Chesterfield which they dedicated in his honor in June of 1960, and which is known as Camp Fr. Freel.
The present rectory of Annunciation parish was purchased by Fr. Freel in 1949. It was an old Florence landmark, having been the residence of the William Cordes family.

Fr. Freel also served as chaplain to Msgr. Thomas F. Cummings Knights of Columbus Council.
Born in Clinton, Dec. 22, 1890, the son of the late James E. and Mary (Grady) Freel, he was a Holy Cross graduate in the class of 1912. He studied Theology at the Grand Seminary in Montreal and was ordained in Montreal Dec. 23, 1916. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
