The funeral service for Joe C. Harkins, age 84 of Ashland, will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Big Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Harkins passed away Friday, February 24, 2017 at the Clay County Nursing Home. He was a native of Tallapoosa County and former resident of Randolph County before moving to Clay County in 1961.

Mr. Harkins had worked in the pulpwood industry, was employed with North Alabama Trucking and had worked as prison guard before retiring from the Alabama Department of Transportation Highway Department as a road maintenance worker. He was a Baptist by faith.

Mr. Harkins is survived by his wife, Shirley Harkins of Ashland; his son, Jimmy Harkins (Vickie) of Ashland; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, plus a large extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Jack Harkins and Ethel Bailey Harkins; four sisters: Mozell Harkins, Marie Denney, Odell Johns and Reather Morton and three brothers: Leonard Harkins, Andrew Harkins and Mitchel Harkins.
