Left his family in New York and New Jersey to work at the world-renowned Imna Kennels in California, where the nation's first collies were bred.

He is mentioned in the authoritative 1924 book "The Collie," thusly:

"There is another class of Collie admirers, without a mention of whom this chapter would not be complete. They are the managers and kennel men who have done much to pilot many of our great specimens to victory. One of the greatest this country has ever known was Mr. Alec Smith, now deceased, who was not only a prince of a good fellow but also an artist in the preparation of a Collie for the ring. Many prominent kennels have owed much of their success to him. Mr. Joe Burrell, known and respected by all those interested in Collies, has also done his share toward the advancement of this breed. What would "The Greystone" or "The Knocklayde Kennels" have been without him? Mr. R. K. Armstrong did much for Mr. Morgan's "Craigston Kennels" while with him. Then there are Mr. David Prime of "The Imna Kennels," Mr. Mike Kennedy of the "Alstead" and later the "Bellhaven" and Mr. George Huhn of the "Southport" and "Alsteads," who have done much to help their employers attain the success with which they have met.
