Sylvia Loretta (Smith) Reid, age 93, of Cedarville, Michigan, died at her home on February 18, 2017. Sylvia was born January 10, 1924 to John Joseph Smith and Carrie Wilhelmina (Holtz) Smith in Oil City, Caddo Parish, Louisiana.

Sylvia grew up in Louisiana and met George Reid when he was stationed there in the United States Air Force. They were married July 5, 1945 and when George finished his tour of duty and was discharged in September, they moved to Bowling Green, Ohio. They had two sons in Bowling Green, while George worked as a policeman and Sylvia worked some part time jobs while raising their sons. When George had his 20 years in, in 1967, they moved to Cedarville and lived there while George worked for Michigan Limestone for another 15 years. George retired in 1983 and they traveled several times to warmer weather in the south until 1994 when George died.

Sylvia traveled some with friends after George died, however, she loved to spend time with her grandchildren and then great grandchildren so she spent most of her time in Cedarville. She was very independent, active, and some would say “feisty”. She liked to read, sew, knit, paint, make ceramics, dance, garden, and can food. She was famous for making sock monkeys for kids and quilted quilts for all of her grandchildren.

Sylvia belonged to the Hessel Presbyterian Church and also the Red Hat Society in Cedarville.

Sylvia is survived by two sons, Kenneth L. Reid and Gary L. Reid both of Cedarville; five grandchildren, Jeffrey (Julie) Reid, Todd (Laurie) Reid, Kimberly Reid, Justin (Casey) Reid, and Jarred (Amy) Reid; twelve great grandchildren, Wesley, Amber, Anna, Morgan, Gavin, Donovan, Trenton, Braxton, Jack, Max, James, and Abigail. She is also survived by her sister, Rosie Fulgium of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, and her brother Meredith “Bud” Smith, three sisters; Leona Dailey, Ethel Leyva, and Edith Franklin.

Memorials may be directed in Sylvia’s name to the American Cancer Society, Northeast Michigan and U.P. Office, 1480 West Center Road, Suite 1, Essexville, MI 48732.

Services will be held Thursday, February 23, 2017 at R. Galer Funeral Home, 24549 S. M-129, Pickford, Michigan. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 2 P.M. Funeral service will begin at 2 P.M. Reverend Judy Arnold will be officiant.
