William Limes was the oldest child of Harmon Limes (Sr.) and Nancy (Campbell) Limes. He was born in Maryland on October 2, 1778. By 1791, he and his family were living in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. In 1805, he is shown as paying personal property tax there.
Coverage of William's life and that of his children is found on page 813 of the book History of Fayette County (Ohio), by R.S. Dills. Page 819 states William and his wife, "... were settlers east of New Martinsburg as early as 1811."
On April 23, 1803, William Limes married Athaliah Doster in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. They had 9 children whose first names all began with the letter "H".
Private William Limes was drafted on July 25, 1813, in Fayette County, Ohio, for a term of 40 days. He was honorably discharged about the 5th of September, 1813, at Franklinton, Ohio. His Bounty Land Claim of March 13, 1851 states, "... that after arriving at Upper Sandusky, Ohio, he was transferred from Captain Crothers' Company to that of Captain Connelly's and the Regiment commanded by John McDonald - which said term of service will appear from the rolls of one or both of said companies, his having lost his certificate of discharge." Captain Crothers Company was part of the Third Regiment Ohio Militia under Colonel James Stewart.
From a government legislative act on March 3, 1855, William Limes was granted under Warrant No. 4793, on March 24th of that year - 120 acres - location not specified.
The History of Ross and Highland Counties, Ohio, Williams Brothers Publishers, includes William Limes and his daughter, Hester Limes Irwin, on a full-page of hand-drawn portraits of the Irwin family of Madison Township, Highland County.
William Limes was a tanner by trade, according to various family records.
Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy, Vol. V, page 259, shows William and Athaliah being "received by request" and references made to their dates of death and places of burial.
William Limes died on December 17, 1863 in Fayette County, Ohio and is buried in the Walnut Creek Cemetery there. Athaliah, his wife, preceded him in death on August 8, 1854; age 68 years, 6 months and 19 days, per cemetery records.
Upon his death, William Limes owned:

14 acres, 30 poles in 6935 in Fayette County, Ohio
53 acres, 50 poles in Highland County, Ohio
110 acres in Survey 728 in Highland County, Ohio
It was later discovered, in 2004 during a research trip to the Fayette County Archives in Washington Court House, Ohio, that William Limes' Estate was paying taxes on land in Marshall County, Kansas. "Another Pioneer Has Gone" – "Mr. Wm. Limes died of palsy, at his residence in Perry Township, in this county, on the 16th inst., at the advanced age of 85 years. Mr. Limes was one of the first settlers in this county, having settled in Perry Township (then Green Township) in 1812, and has resided on the same farm where he first located, until his death – 51 years. Few men live to so ripe an old age, and fewer remain upon the same location for so many years. His son, Harrison Limes, informed us that his father helped to raise the first hewed log house that was built in this village; that he "carried up one corner."
The old pioneers of the Paint Creek valley are silently but steadily dropping off, one by one; soon there will be none left to interest and amuse the present generation with anecdotes, history, adventure, and the privations that the early pioneers of this county were compelled to endure while "roughing in the Bush."
