Called "Red" because of his beard. Joseph came from Kishinev (now Chisinau, Moldova).
His grandson (child on stool in photo), Enrich Jacob "Henry" Talge (memorial ID#158163627), states in his memoir that, yes indeed, he was called "Red Grandfather" by his grandchildren because of his red hair and beard. It was also stated that he had all of his own teeth and didn't need glasses. Henry must have been impressed with his grandfather's health. It is surprising that he passed away 4 years after he arrived to NYC.
Joseph and his wife, Feyga, had several children, among them were:
Bessie Tallal Stoller (b. 1855 Kishinev)
Victor Tallal (b. 1860 Kishinev)
Yokav Talal (b.c. 1866 Kishinev, d. bef. 1912 Kishinev)
____ Talal (aft. 1867 Kishinev)
