CRASH INVESTIGATION CONTINUES; RITES ANNOUNCED FOR 2 VICTIMS

An investigator from the National Transportation Safety Board was in Ogden today trying to find the cause of an airplane crash in West Ogden Sunday evening which claimed the lives of four people.

Results of the investigation were not expected to be disclosed until its completion. No date has been given.

The crash of the twin-engine plane in West Ogden Park about 6:20 p.m. Sunday killed two Huntsville residents, a Salt Lake City man living in Ogden, and a former Ogden man, first believed to be from Roy.

Victims were George Brent Buckway, 32, of 327 S. 7500 E., Huntsville; Mrs. Jay Earl (Ann) Thompson, 34, Huntsville; Gus G. Floor of Slat Lake City and 2851 Monroe in Ogden ; and James Walter Schafer, 37, of Grantsville.

Mr. Schafer was at first identified as Jim Ryan of Wyoming on the basis of a letter found on him at the hospital. Fyan was the victim's native name and Schafer was his adopted name, police said. Hospital authorities later listed him as a resident of Roy. He was a former Ogden resident.

Police interviews with witnesses showed the plane was coming in for a landing at the Ogden Municipal Airport. Control tower authorities said the pilot, Mr. Buckway, had notified them of engine failures and landing gear problems just before the crash. They had cleared the airport for an emergency landing and notified the fire department to stand by. The plane, approaching from the west, crashed into the trees in West Ogden Park, exploding and scattering burning debris more than 200 feet. Miraculously, no one in the park was injured.

Family members said the group had been on a fishing trip, apparently to Wyoming. Police found fish and fishing equipment strewn about the crash site.

Meanwhile final services have been announced for Mr., Schafer and Mr. Floor. Funeral services for James Walter Schafer will be conducted in Lander, Wyo. Mr. Schafer was born Jan. 22, 1935, in Drumright, Okla., a son of Wallace and Helen Schfer. On Dec. 6, 1967, he was married to Judith Kay Olle in Buchanan, Mich. Surviving are his widow of Grantsville; one son and one daughter, Jim Bob Schafer and Leslie Elizabeth Schafer, both of Grantsville; one sister, Mrs. Linda Scott, Huntington Beach, Calif.; one half brother, Lewis, Standard, California. Burial will be in Lander, Wyo. Funeral directofs are Chapel of Flowers Mortuary, in Ogden.
