Obituary:
Susie L. Backer, 95, of Hiawatha, died early Thursday morning, July 22, 2004, at the Sabetha Community Hospital where she had been a patient since Saturday. She was born near Hopeville, Iowa in Clarke County, April 10, 1909, one of ten children of Warren and Mary Amanda Deets Beaman. She grew up at Hopeville where she attended school and graduated from the 8th grade. In Susie's younger years, she worked at the telephone office and the grocery store, both at Hopeville. In later years, she worked in the kitchen for her sister and husband Alice and Paul Jenkins at the Maple Leaf Restaurant in Hiawatha for several years. Susie had made her home at the Maple Grove Apartments until 18 months ago when she moved to the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha. Mrs. Backer was a longtime member of the Murray, Iowa United Methodist Church before transferring her membership to the First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Susie married Ward E. Backer, February 4, 1937 at Des Moines, Iowa. They farmed and raised purebred angus cattle southeast of Murray from 1937 until 1971, at which time they moved to Hiawatha. He died August 16, 1995 She was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers Boyd, Loyd, Kenneth, Jack; three sisters Alma, Louise, and Betty. Survivors include a son Merlin Backer and wife Linda of Bern; Two sisters Alice Jenkins and husband Paul of Hiawatha Lucille Franck and husband Charles of Ankeny, Iowa Three grandchildren Mark Backer of Sabetha Marna Lynch and husband Dan of Hershey, PA Margo Sweany and husband Mark of Overland Park, KS 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Sam Blythe of Highland, will officiate. Graveside services are planned for 1 p.m. Monday, at the Hopeville Cemetery, Hopeville, Iowa. Duane Hendricks will officiate.
