Obituary of John G. Halstein

John "Jack" G. Halstein, age 93, of Chester and a former resident of New Britain, passed away on Saturday, April 27th at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. Jack was the beloved husband of the late Hope (McHale) Halstein. Hope passed away on December 16, 2009 and she and Jack enjoyed 60 years of marriage. Jack was born in Meriden on December 22, 1919 the son of John D. and Margaret C. (Riley) Halstein. He had worked many years in the accounting department for the Connecticut Light and Power Company. Jack proudly served his country during World War II in the submarine service and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroic conduct on May 9, 1944 aboard the U.S.S. PC - 558 off Palermo, Italy. Jack loved baseball and was a pitcher for the semi-pro International Silver baseball team in Meriden; he also was an avid football fan. He was a life member of the American Legion Post in Rocky Hill and was a member of the Patriot Craft Sailors Association. Jack is survived by his daughters, Leslie J. Watkins and her husband Martin of Chester, and Sheryl A. Cannata of Old Saybrook, his granddaughters, Erin Cannata and Carrie Legein and her husband Noah, great grandchildren, Luke and Alexa Legein, and Mackenzie Cannata. He also leaves two nieces and seven nephews. Jack was predeceased by his five sisters, one brother, and his son-in-law, Sam Cannata. Visitation will be held at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street in Centerbrook on Wednesday, May 1st from 10:00AM to 11:00AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Saint Joseph's Church, 48 Middlesex Avenue in Chester at 11:30 AM. Interment following Mass with the rendering of Full Military Honors will be held in the Riverside Cemetery in Old Saybrook. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jack's name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook Street, I 91 Tech. Ctr., Rocky Hill, CT 06067-3045.
