Robert J. Mattingly, age 75, of Medford, WI, died Tuesday, January 27, 1998, at Memorial Nursing Home in Medford. Born July 28, 1922 in Cloverport, he was a son of the late Thomas E. and Beulah R. Thurman Mattingly. He retired from Hurd Millwood, Medford, in 1987. While at Hurd, he founded Hurd Fire Brigade of which he was Captain. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, a 29 year member of the Medford Volunteer Fire Department, Medford Development Foundation, Chelsea Conservation Club, Tee Hi Golf Club, and the Early Morning Splashers Senior Citizens. His wife of 55 years, Mrs. Elva C. Smedegard preceded him in death April 16, 1997. Surviving are two daughters, Roberta Couillard, Medford and Carol Winter, Stetsonville; two sons, Dave Mattingly, Wausan and Thomas Mattingly, Salesville, OH; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, January 30 at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Fr. Dennis Meulemans officiating. Burial was in Medland (Medford) Evergreen Cemetery II under the direction of Hermer Funeral Home.
