notes of Thomas Macy:
Per my Great aunt, Rose (VanNess) Elmore wrote in her family records, dated June 30, 1932, John W. VanNest wrote letters to her father, Daniel VanNest, in the years of 1851 through 1853. She stated that she got most of her personal information from these letters. she states that John W. moved from New York to Ohio in 1838 and was Postmaster in Millbrook. He also had a general store.

Quote: Letter:

Old Letter Oxford Ohio Sept 15, 1921 Mrs. Alice Van Ness Ferguson
Dear Cousin
Received your letter & will give you all the information I can. I think you can get the best information by writing to Peter Van Neste at Wooster, Ohio. The last account I had of him he was Mayor of that city, that was some time ago. Your Great Grandfather John Van Nest, was my Grandfather. He & his wife separated. John Van Neste had four sons by his first wife {ABIGAIL WARNE}, oldest was Joseph who lived & died & was buried in St. Joseph MO. I don't know which was the older, your Grandfather or my father, who name was Elijah, born Feb 12, 1801 & d. June 19, 1883. Your grandfather's name was Furman & Daniel was the youngest. {Note: This is Wilma J. Van Ness-Jervis-Marion gggrandfather}. I have nothing to show when he was born, but he died at Elwood, Indiana, lived to be over 90 years old. He has several children living in that vicinity. They go by the name of "VAN NESS". My father was married twice, there being two sets of children. His first wife was Rebecca Whelden & there were 5 children, two girls and 3 boys, none living. She died July 1, 1841. His second wife was Elizabeth Tucker, who was my mother, and she is gone. There 6 children, 2 girls and 4 boys. Four of us still living. I am the oldest of the living, will be 77 next April. Father & Uncle Joe and Uncle Furman when they started to school for fear of being teased about the name and be called chicken nest changed their name from Van Nest to Van Ness.
I have book that Grandfather Van Nest sent me in 1852. I was named for him & he wanted me to write my name Van Nest, but father would not allow it.
I have several letters written by my grandfather to my father, so I know I am writing facts to you about our name. That is why I want you to write to Peter Van Neste as I think you can get the most information from him. I am most sure you can get the birth & death of my grandfather from him. Grandmother was buried at the old Baptist graveyard [which is almost a thing of the past], several miles fro here. I will go there & try to find the date of her birth & death and write to you later. Would you like to write me about your father's last illness & death. I have his photo on a card that he sent me.
After you have heard from Peter Van Neste at Wooster, Ohio, would like you to write me the information you get. If Peter Van Neste sends you the date of birth & death of Grandfather, John Van Nest, would like for you to write & tell me. Have often thought of going to see where Grandfather was buried & to see Peter as he has wanted me to come to see him. I have no one but a daughter and granddaughter of my own family as both wives are dead. Last one passed away the 26th of last February. I am living with my sister Jennie, Your cousin John Van Nest, Oxford Ohio.
P.S. Written by Addie Van Ness Morris for John Van Nest. I am his half brother's daughter. Gideon was my father's name & after his death in 1886 I made my home with John Van Ness and his first wife, or rather double relations. John Van Ness & Gideon Van Ness were half brothers & their wives were sisters.

Most Elder VanNess stated it was Abigail Warne VanNest[e] that changed the name from Van Nest so John couldn't locate them when they left New Jersey to Ohio. Most common story I heard on name change from descendants.
Joseph son of John & Abigail Warne Van Nest-- Joseph stated to his descendants that Abigail changed spelling of name so John W. wouldn't know their whereabouts & couldn't
find the children.
Elijah son of John & Abigail Warne Van Nest- Elijah descendants states in letters to cousin it was the boys changed the name to Van Ness & refused their family to use the Van Nest spelling. Due to facts when they were young, they were teased badly at school & called " Chicken Nest".
No matter how the name changed to VAN NESS, WE ALL ARE A
VAN NESTE/VAN NESS/possibly in Netherlands Van Den Neste.

Wayne County Ohio: pg.79
J.P. Van Nest was born in Rowsburg, Ashland Co. Ohio Aug. 6, 1841; he married October 3, 1861 to Mary E. Gardner of the village...Had 8 children,,,His father was John who was an early settler in that section of Northern Ohio... J.P. [Joseph] grandfather was John Van Nest..[.John W.];
Note: John P. Van Nest home in Wooster Ohio. He is the son of John Van Nest that came from PA about 1838. He was in the insurance business in Wooster.

I have been in contact with Rose Elmore family before 1990 on genealogy. [Rose used John Warne as name--no record to prove]
