LATHROP, Mo. - Dr. Harold W. "Tommy" Allen, son of James and Fannie C. Hostetler Allen was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Gerster, Mo. He passed away on July 3, 2009, at the age of 88. Dr. Allen graduated from Butcher Elementary School and Weaubleau High School and began his pre-dental degree at CMSU in Warrensburg, Mo. On June 22, 1942, he enlisted in the Army of the United States and served until Oct. 21, 1945, when he was mustered out as Master Sergeant. While on active duty with the 29th Infantry Division, he received five bronze star medals for Campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Upon his return to Missouri, he resumed his dental studies at the University of Kansas City, School of Dentistry. After his graduation in 1949, and a one year internship with the U.S. Department of Health, Dr. Allen opened his practice in Lathrop, Mo. He remained in practice there until his retirement in 1988. Dr. Allen was a Life Member if the American Dental Association, Life Member of the Missouri Dental Association, Past President of the Northwest Missouri Dental Society, Past Trustee of the Missouri Dental Association, Life Member of the Lathrop Masonic Lodge No. 506, member of the St. Joseph Scottish Rite, member of the Molia Shrine Club, Life Member of Post No, 467 of the American Legion, Life Member of Post No. 442 Veterans of Foreign Wars, past member of the Lathrop School Board, and past member of the Lathrop Board of Aldermen. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eunice and a sister that died at birth; and three brothers, Harvey, Bill, and Pat. He is survived by three children, Patricia and husband Gary Ormsby, Poplar Bluff, Mo., Harold W. Allen II and wife Melody, Littleton, Colo., and Rebecca Flint, Cameron, Mo.; five grandchildren. Jennifer Hawkins, Jonathan Allen, Lance Derstler, Lauren Murrell and Harold Allen III; and four great-grandchildren, Kail Derstler, Aiden Allen, Tara Derstler and Nathan Hawkins; nieces, nephews and others relatives and friends.
