Corporal Loney Evans Jr was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, CPL Evans served our country until October 5th, 1968 in Dinh Tuong, South Vietnam. He was 21 years old and was not married. Loney died from drowning. His body was recovered. CPL Evans is on panel 41W, line 011 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.

"Tank" was a big guy with a presence larger than life. I was only there three months before I got hit and came home. I remember Tank as a BIG guy. He carried ammo for the M-60 gunner. Carried an M-14, too, as I recall. I was there the day he drowned. Sad, very sad. I was told he was called Tank because his car had a spare gas tank on it used for something or other. He had a smile as big as his face, and that was big. He was a great guy. He always made me feel welcome. Doc MacKechnie, Recon Platoon, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, [email protected].

He was the son of Mrs Kate S Evans, 208 1/2 New College Street, Oxford, NC.

He served with the Combat Support Company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, "Old Reliables", USARV.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Bravery and two Purple Heart Medals for his combat related wounds, the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
