Gary Thomas Allred, 58, of Winston-Salem and Myrtle Beach, S.C., the president and CEO of K&W Cafeterias Inc., died unexpectedly Saturday morning, Sept. 4, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Allred was born Aug. 16, 1946, in Forsyth County to Vivian Coffey Allred and the late Grady Thomas Allred Sr. He graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy in 1964 and received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Wake Forest University in 1972. He worked for his father in the family-owned business and assumed the titles of president and CEO in 1986. Like his father, Gary loved the restaurant business, especially K&W, and had a respect and concern for his employees. He was also founder of Southern Market in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and was affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Restaurant Association, vice president of the Forsyth County Restaurant Association, and served as a member on various boards, committees, civic and charitable causes throughout the Southeast. He was a member of the Deacon Club and was a strong supporter of the athletic programs at his alma mater, Wake Forest University. He was a great golfer, a friend to a "friend in need", and will be greatly missed by so many. Although he found great joy in the success of the company that was guided for so many years by his beloved father, his greatest joys and his greatest source of pride came from his family.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Hicks Allred, of the home; three beloved daughters, Natalie Allred Smith and husband Todd of Winston-Salem, Leslie Allred Fincher and husband Steve of Raleigh, and Julie "Bird" Allred of Winston-Salem; three granddaughters, Taylor, Carson and Cameron Smith of Winston-Salem; two stepdaughters, Paige and Curry Walker, both of Charleston, S.C.; his mother, Vivian Allred Dixon and husband Don of Bethania; a brother, Donnie Allred of Cornelius; two loving aunts, Phyllis Johnson and Betty Bumgardner; and four nephews, Derek Duggins, Jordan Tucci, Dax Allred and Bill Allred. In addition to his parents, Mr. Allred was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Shirley C. Allred; a brother, Grady T. Allred Jr.; a nephew, Thomas Bailey Allred; and his beloved grandmother, Elsie B. Dunnavant. He is also survived by a host of other beloved relatives and many, many friends. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University. The Rev. Dr. Robert C. Wilkes, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach, will preside, assisted by the Rev. Jon Boling of Mizpah Moravian Church in Rural Hall. Interment will follow in the family plot at Forsyth Memorial Park.
