James Robert Fitzer, was a prominent clarinetist and teacher and band director at Hubbard's public schools and at Dana School of Music, died in November, 1976. Through the years, he frequently was accompanied, musically, by his wife, prominent pianist Dolores Severino Fitzer.

He leaves his wife, the former Dolores Severino, a daughter, Karen, a graduate of the University of Chicago, now working under a research grant in Philadelphia; and a son, Robert, a recent Northwestern University graduate, who plays clarinet with the Chicago Civic Orchestra.

A daughter, Susan, and infant son, Daniel, both died in 1959.
