Gravestone Reads: Eldridge Fortner 128 Reg. Ill. Vol. Died Jan. 11, 1863 Aged 27 Y's, 2 M's, 24 d's

Military, Civil War: Three brothers were inducted into the Illinois 128th: William Robert Fortner, Andrew Jackson Fortner, and James Eldridge Fortner. James Eldridge died January 11, 1863 with a fever. James Eldridge Fortner, Company C, Pvt. 128th Regiment, Illinois Infantry (Residence at time of Muster 4 Nov 1862, Locust Grove, ILL)

This Burial is just south of the Franklin - Williamson County line. It is South of Thompsonville IL on the west side of the road. It is on rather high ground a little higher than the road and is the only stone there. It is close enough to the road that you could see it in the Winter. According to a local farmer, James Eldridge Fortner was coming home from the war (Civil War) trying to reach his home after being injured or sick.
