Audrey Ethel Jensen, a long-time resident of Roseburg, died on November 19, 2016, at the age of 93.

She was born May 23, 1923, in Oakland, California, to Carl Elmer Starbuck and Margaret Oren Mitchell.

It wasn't long before they moved to Myrtle Creek, Oregon, where her father and mother started a dairy farm. Audrey recounted many stories of the fun she and her two brothers, Stewart and Carl, had growing up in Myrtle Creek and working on the farm.

Audrey graduated from Myrtle Creek High School in 1941, and on December 15, 1941, married Arthur Henry Smith, fondly known as Jack, in Portland, Oregon.

Jack went off to war and Audrey worked for the Bonneville Power Administration and the U.S. Department of the Interior during that time. They moved to Centralia, Washington after the war, and Audrey gave birth to their son, Jerry Allen Smith, on December 23, 1947.

Jack and Audrey entered into a partnership, Twin City Paint and Appliances Co. and after selling their interest in that, moved to Roseburg, Oregon, and purchased an interest in the Hub Lumber Co.

On July 7, 1951, their daughter, Joan Margaret Smith, was born. They eventually moved to Tillamook, Oregon, and Jack and his partner built a sawmill, Juno Hardwood Co. Jack passed away on July 9, 1968, and Audrey moved back to Roseburg, Oregon.

In Roseburg, she met Haakon Olaf Jensen, fondly known as Hoke. They fell in love and were soon married. Audrey and Hoke spent a lot of time at the Oregon coast fishing and enjoying camping and the outdoors. They also were busy as owners of a local business, the Single Tree, and later were managers of the Garden Villa Motel. Hoke passed away on November 14, 1998.

She had many talents, including being a great cook, and she loved to entertain her family and friends, making sure they had plenty to eat. During her life her work talents, beyond war time employment, included bookkeeping and secretarial work, and working for the telephone company. She was a business owner and a business manager.

Her last employment was with the Roseburg YMCA. She was hired on April 1, 1989, and worked until November, 2005. She volunteered at the YMCA after her actual retirement. During her time there she made many, many friends. You couldn't go anywhere in town where she did not meet someone she knew. She was nominated Employee of the Year more than once. Audrey loved greeting the people as they came in and loved working with the children.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Donna Smith, and her step-daughter, Patty Houston, her husband, Orville, their three children, Jeffery, Jodi and Randy, a grandson, Rod, a granddaughter, Michele, eight great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.

We will be celebrating the life of Audrey at the Wilson Chapel of the Roses on Friday, January 6, 2017, at 2:00 PM.
