Mrs. Virginia Ruth "Pete" Batten Huggins, 90, of Greenville, formerly of Dunn, died Thursday at Harmony Hall Nursing and Rehab. in Kinston, NC.

Mrs. Huggins, born in Columbus County, was the daqughter of the late Barney Miles Batten and Janie Schwartz Batten and the widow of Eugene "Jeep" Huggins. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Miles Batten, and three sisters, Mildred Batten Moore, Vie Batten Smith, and Athlyn Batten Langford.

She was a bookkeeper for 45 years. She worked diligently with the Pines of Carolina Girl Scouts where she taught young girls from Harnett County area for over 20 years. She was a dedicated member of Hood Memorial Christian Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and Church music to children for over 40 years. She also served as President for the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was also very active in the Westfield Baptist Church choir and church for many years.

She also sang in many venues for over 60 years, and sang with the Cape Fear Chorale. She was a founding member of the Harnett Regional Theatre where she worked on various boards and participated in many musical productions. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, served on the Dunn Bicentennial committee, and was an integral part of the inception of the marble statue that was erected in honor of General William C. Lee.

She is survived by a son, Miles and wife Debbie Adkins Huggins of Greenville; two daughters, Kathi Huggins Howell and husband Eric of Farmville; and Jane Huggins Walston and husband Rufus of Greenville; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The family received friends 2-3 PM prior services at the church.

The funeral services were held at 3 PM, Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Hood Memorial Christian Church with the Rev. Dr. Greg Rogers officiating.

Burial was made in Greenwood Cemetery, Dunn, NC.
