At the time of her death, she was survived by a 4 year old daughter, Ruby Mae and an infant son. She was proceeded in death by her father, Noah Mathews and brother Oscar Mathis. Survivors included her mother, Rosa Bumgarner Lloyd and her brothers; Charlie Matthews of Gastonia, NC, and Ivey Mathews of Lenoir, NC. Lucy was also survived by her sisters; Estelle Mathews Taylor of Newton, NC, Donnie (Doan) Matthews Estes of Granite Falls, NC, and Gladys Matthews Pryor of Granite Falls, NC. Lucy's half sisters were Rosa Lee and Irene Lloyd of Granite Falls and a half brother, George Lloyd also of Granite Falls, NC.
Lucy was shot and killed by her husband Lee Pennell on February 5, 1933, near Hudson, North Carolina, at the age of 21. Her husband committed suicide following the shooting. Her gravesite, according to her NC Death Record is listed in Center Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Hudson NC but has not been located. Several family members are buried in this cemetery also. No headstone or church records exist verifying her grave at Center Grove.
