Claude Manley McCord, Jr., 94, died October 18, 2014. Mr. McCord was born August 16, 1920, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Claude and Mollie McCormick McCord, and moved to Memphis with his parents and sister in 1927. He attended Snowden School and Fairview Junior High School, and graduated from Central High School in 1938. In 1942 he graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering fraternity and Delta Tau Delta social fraternity. Mr. McCord served in World War II as a Signal Officer of the Eleventh Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1945. After the war he returned to Memphis where he was president of Memphis Wood Products, Inc., and the founder of Beechwood Corporation in Millington, Tennessee. Mr. McCord was a member of Idlewild Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon and elder. He was a member of the Lumbermen’s Club of Memphis and a former member of the Memphis Rotary Club and the Memphis Country Club. After retiring from business, Mr. McCord volunteered for MIFA, the American Cancer Society, the Church Health Center, and his recent community at

Trezevant Episcopal Home where he enjoyed friendships with both residents and staff. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Mollie Royall McCord, and his first wife, Betty Janes McCord. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jack Rich Clement McCord, two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth McCord Marshall (Gerald) of Memphis and Claudette McCord Oliver (William) of Greenville, South Carolina, and four grandchildren, Ben Marshall, Mollie Marshall, Elizabeth Oliver and Langdon Oliver. Mr. McCord will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends for his gracious and genial manner, quick wit, and compassionate Christian spirit. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 21, at Memorial Park on Poplar at Yates at noon. Services will follow at 1:00 p.m. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Idlewild Presbyterian Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
