The Gardner family was living in a large mansion in South Egg Harbor at the time of Albert's death. He was returning home from Egg Harbor City and had to cross the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks and failed to see the oncoming fast express "Nellie Bly" which struck and killed him instantly.
