Harris, Beulah A.
Saline, MI

Age 92, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Linden Square Assisted Living. She was born December 13, 1924 as Oakie Beulah Addington in Jonancy, KY, the daughter of Benton and Frances (Osborne) Addington. Beulah was the first of eight children with Victor, Daryl, Bobbie, Billie, Janice, Karrel and Harrel following her. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a homemaker. Her brothers Victor and Harrel both died shortly after being born.

She went to Virgie, KY elementary and high schools, where she only went to school up until the ninth grade. She had stated that growing up in the Great Depression was very sad and the family had to move into her grandmother’s house because they could no longer afford their house. Her father had to work a lot more than he did before the depression.

Beulah met a young man named David. He had lived with her family and helped her father out with the farm. They married in 1940 and had their first of three children soon after; she was fifteen years old. They lived together in Denton, KY where David first worked on the family farm and then at a coal mine. She also had a job at the local Dime Shop to help support the family.

After a couple of years living in Kentucky, they moved to Detroit because there were better jobs in Michigan and they both could support the family better here. She had spent twenty years with David before getting a divorce. Five years after the divorce, David passed away from lung cancer, probably from working in the coal mines. Beulah said that getting a divorce was no big deal because their marriage wasn’t the best.

Shortly after moving to Detroit, she started working at Ford Motor Company so that she could support the three children. Soon after that, she met the love of her life, John Harris, at Ford where they both worked. On October 26, 1968, eight years after they met, they got married. John had two children previous to their marriage and Beulah treated them just as her own. She also legally changed her name from Oakie Beulah to Beulah Addington Harris. John’s parents advocated for them to get married. John’s father was a doctor and was very successful and wanted John and Beulah to be too.

They moved to their first home on Grove Road. John also treated Beulah’s children like his own, even though the three children didn’t live at home. John and Beulah had a wonderful marriage that may not have been perfect but they sure did love each other. They ended up moving to their dream house out on a lake where they lived together until John passed away from a kidney disease. Beulah then moved closer to family so they didn’t have to drive so far and so that she didn’t have to clean her big lake house all by herself.

Beulah was born into and lived through some difficult times but love filled her life and she gave of herself to her family. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include: five children, Jimmy D. (Carolyn) Anderson, Charles J. (Gerri) Anderson, Cheryl F. (James) Brown, John “Jason” (Iris) Harris and Vicki Waugh; eight grandchildren, Alicia M. (Michael) McGovern, Jeffrey A. (Laura) Anderson, Shari L. Martuscelli, Stacie L. Brown, James D. (Jill) Brown, Robert (Jillian) Harris, Aubry Waugh and Jason Waugh; eight great grandchildren, Jordan and Rachel McGovern, Jeffrey M. (Danielle) Anderson, Steven C. Anderson, Madeline, Marney, Owen and Ben Brown; one great-great granddaughter, Olivia Anderson; one sister Janice; one brother Karrel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers and sisters.

The funeral service will be 11 am Monday, January 16, 2017 at Ypsilanti Old Regular Baptist Church, 5668 Denton Road, Canton with Brother Danny Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to either St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Ypsilanti Old Regular Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at Stark Funeral Service where the family will greet friends 1-4 and 6-8 pm Sunday and at the church from 10 am until time of service Monday.
