Jane was the oldest child of David Bruce Darlington and Margaret Barnett. In 1851, the family moved to Des Moines County, Iowa. After her mother died in 1857, and her father in 1864, Jane returned to New Bloomfield, where she lived with an elderly couple.

At the age of 39, she married Jacob Beaver on March 5, 1872. They had no children. Soon after marrying, they moved to Paola, Kansas with two of Jacob's children, Elizabeth and Meredith.

After Jacob died, Jane Mary's sister Tahpenas Sara Darlington came and lived with her in Paola.
