Alexander "Alex" E. Fitzgerald, Jr., 87, of Charlotte went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 28, 2014. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him. He had a great laugh, a wonderful sense of humor and loved to tell stories of his family, his childhood growing up in Pittsburgh, of his two tours of duty in the Navy - one in WWII and also in the Korean War and all the history from his past. He had a rich life and he lived it well. He was the beloved son of the late Alexander E. Fitzgerald, Sr. and Caroline E. Lappe Fitzgerald.

Serving the Lord was the thing he desired most. He was always good at building things and helped build local churches in North Carolina and also on mission trips with constructing buildings on the mission field around the world. He was dependable, hardworking, honest, fun loving, willing to help others whenever he was able and loved God with all his heart. He was an avid reader and loved learning, a music lover, a wonderful cook and great baker. His family was the love of his life. He is survived by his bride of 60 years, his wife, Edna; his children, Marcy and Dan Bishir of St. Peters, MO and Chris Fitzgerald of Charlotte, NC; his brother, Dan Fitzgerald of Vero Beach, FL; his sister, Alicia Lippman of Kennesaw, GA; his grandchildren, Mandy and Asa Shepherd and Thomas Bishir of St. Peters, MO; and three great-grandchildren, Addyson, Ethan and Jackson Shepherd.

In addition to his parents, Alex was preceded in death by his brother John "Jack" Fitzgerald, sister Jeanne Howard, brother Paul Fitzgerald and sister Mary Jane Fitzgerald.

Interment will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, at the Georgia National Cemetery with military honors and a service will follow with Bruce Walker officiating and special music and speaking by Becky Steele Gritton and Debbie Howard Walker.
