George Edward Burchfield (1921-2017)

George Edward Burchfield of Columbia, MS passed away on January 11, 2017 at the age of 95. Born in Winston County, Mississippi to Edward Lonzo and Sarah Belle Permenter Burchfield, he was one of nine children. He married Edna Earl Ford in 1948.

George was a Sargent in the U.S. Army in the 881st Field Artillery Battalion 69th Division, serving for four years and fighting in Germany during WWII. During his service he was awarded the Bronze Star medal for heroic achievement in connection with military operations as well as the ATO, EAMETO, Good Conduct and World War II Victory medals.

After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1946, he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Geology from Millsaps College and Mississippi State University respectively. He taught Geology at Mississippi State and then joined Gulf Oil where he enjoyed a successful 33 year career as a geologist in positions of increasing responsibility. While with Gulf, he worked in Monroeville, AL, Shreveport, LA, Jackson, MS and then moved to Columbia, MS in 1969 where he later retired in 1985.

George loved fishing and gardening and was an active member of the Men's Bible Class at Columbia's First United Methodist Church for many years.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Edna, as well as his siblings Eddie Muriel Burchfield Klingaman, Ora Louise Burchfield Norris, Inez Addie Burchfield Shoemaker, James William Burchfield, Tommie Lynwood Burchfield, Kenneth Permenter Burchfield and Glenn Walton Burchfield. He is survived by daughters Elizabeth Ann Burchfield and Rebecca Jane Burchfield Wagstaff, son-in-law Warren Timothy Wagstaff, grandson Jordan Philip Wagstaff and brother Oliver Keith Burchfield.

Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Columbia on Sunday, January 15 at 3:00 p.m. with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery immediately following. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., also at First United Methodist Church, preceding the funeral service.
