DAVID CASHMAN TAKEN AFTER A 6 DAY ILLNESS

93 Year Old Man Widely Known In This Area Had Been Active in His Elderly Age

David Murphy Cashman, better known over the country as "Doc", died at the St. Joseph's Mercy hospital here at 1:00 a. m. today. He was 93 years of age, widely known and liked. Although in 90's Mr. Cashman had been bedfast for less than six days prior to his death and up until that time was about visiting with his friends as usual.
Tall and erect he was a well known figure in this city, and over the county and his death brings sorrow to a great circle of friends and relatives.

Born In Ohio.

Mr. Cashman was born on May 8, 1847, in Clinton County, Ohio. As a small lad he had moved to Illinois and had lived with his parents near Galesburg until he grew to young manhood. As a young man he came to Iowa in 1865. He first lived in the vicinity of Clarinda and there united in marriage with Mary Moore in 1866. The couple later made their home in Corning where they resided until the wife's death. Mr. Cashman then moved to Appanoose County and settled in the Garfield and Philadelphia community. It was on August 2, 1990 that he unite in marriage a second time, his wife being Martha Baughman, a rural school teacher of the county.

Later at Numa.

Later the Cashman family resided at Numa and still later moved to Caldwell Township near Exline where they lived for some 12 years. Prior to moving to Centerville15 years ago the family lived on what is known as the Cashman farm at the No. 30 corner south of Centerville.

Two Children.

Two children were born to his first marriage, who were Clark and Stella Cashman, since deceased. One daughter was born to his second marriage who is Mrs. Earl Talbott and with whom he had lived prior to his death.
Mrs. Cashman died here in 1934. Surviving in addition to his daughter and two brothers, Henry Cashman, of Emporia, Kansas, who is the youngest member of the Cashman family, and who is 84 years of age, and Emerson Cashman, who resides in Galesburg, Illinois, and is 88 years of age. The former will arrive here tomorrow to attend his brother's funeral. Originally there were 13 members of the Cashman family and the two now survive.

Held Various Offices.

Mr. Cashman had held various township offices over the county being at different times township trustee, justice of the peace, school director, and so on. He was at one time a Democrat but in the later years had become a strong Republican supporter. His last ballot was cast for Willkie in the general election this year.
Perhaps Mr. Cashman's greatest joy was the Fife and Drum Corps which he had organized here a number of years ago. Although 93 years of age he had played with the Drum Corps during the appearance here this fall of Governor George Willson. With his death the Corps is sadly depleted. Originally it had consisted of Mose and George Livingood, Clarence Cosner and Mr. Casman. Mr. Cosner preceded Mr. Cashman in death, the other two members survive.

Widely Known and Liked.

The Cashman fife and drum corps had played here on many occasions. Partially due to this activity but chiefly to the fact that he never knew a stranger and was always genial and kindly he was known in all parts of the county and adjacent territory.
He had been a charter member of the Odd Fellows lodge at Exline, was a member of the Christian Church and had at one time been a Sunday School teacher.
Funeral services will be held for the Miller Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock Thursday and will be conducted by Rev. Paul H. Hicks, pastor at the Methodist Church. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery.
