Russell Beshears was born in Missouri, a son of John Lee Beshears 1864–1927 and Matilda Doke Caldwell. He had siblings Lester L., Robert Hurley 1894–1973, Catherine Florence "Katie" 1896–1975 and Glenn Newton Beshears 1904–1967.

He was survived by his wife Edna, son in Houston, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
