She attended common school and was a faithful and conscientious worker in the Methodist church. Here is a quote from Martha Stocker Palmer, her daughter, "When Dennis and Laura moved to the farm, in 1844, which they brought after it was taken from the government; the forest covered much of the place and came quite near the log cabin which was their first home. Malaria from the surrounding lakes and swamps was very prevalent, and at one time all the family, mother, father, Willard and Roxanna were too sick to hold up their heads, except little Adelia, about 3 1/2 years old, who was their only nurse, relieving their feverish thirst by carrying them water to drink, making the rounds over and over again. After the others recovered little Delia's mission on earth was done. She sickened and died." Laura Palmer Miller quotes: "Grandma died shortly before I was born so I don't remember her, but I was named after her. She was described as stout, taller than my grandfather. Grandmother was considered a big woman. Uncle Fletcher Clemons said she was a "Noble Woman". In spite of the fact that she had a large family, if there was any sickness in the neighborhood, my grandmother would always be called upon and would go to help. She was knowledgeable about treating illnesses."
A Metamora obituary states: Mrs Dennis Stocker, sister to Wm. N. Varnum of Lapeer, died there, March 3, 1890, age 69. Wed 12 March 1890, pg 5 col 3 "Lapeer county Democrat" states: "The funeral of Mrs Dennis Stocker occurred at the Congregational Church here (Metamora) last Sunday, and was one of the largest of the season. Elder Anderson officiated."
She could have been born in Hilton Co., Ontario, Canada and Maybe Married there too. Information from THE VARNUMS OF DRACUTT (OF MASS) BY JOHN MARSHALL VARNUM
