Lloyd Prescott Kirry Jr. obituary

Lloyd Prescott Kirry , Jr., died October 5, 2008, at Franciscan Hospice House in University Place. He was born January 26, 1927, to Lloyd and Barbara (Buchanan) Kirry in Portland, Oregon. Kirry was an economic development planner, retiring in 2005 from the United States Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration, having last served as the field representative for Washington. Kirry had a previous career as an economic development planner with the Washington State Department of Commerce. He was later a planning consultant in private practice for a few years before beginning his federal career. Kirry worked as a planner for the City of Vancouver before moving to Olympia in 1957 to begin his state career.

Kirry 's earliest years growing up were in Portland, Oregon. He was a young teenager when he moved to Forest Grove, Oregon with his mother. At Forest Grove High School, known as "Pres," Kirry was a standout football player, track star and student leader, serving as ASB president. Kirry completed his 1945 senior year in the military during World War II, serving in the Army and Merchant Marines. He was stationed in occupied Japan.

Following discharge, in 1947 Kirry married his high school sweetheart, Josephine Follette, of Gales Creek, Oregon. With an emerging family in tow, Kirry attended Oregon State University and graduated from the University of Washington, earning a bachelor's degree in sociology. Family gatherings topped Kirry 's interests. He was noted for his affable character and his official-appearing advisory letters, meticulously spelling out planning details for holiday gatherings and family outings. While others may question the existence of Santa Claus, Kirry had journeyman status as the genuine fellow. He embraced the jovial rituals for 60 years, having stirred the annual delight to six generations, now leaving large boots to fill.

Kirry is survived by eight children, Lloyd Kirry III, Pauline Krauss, Maggie Kirry -Chambers, Geneva Graham, Charlie Kirry , Barbara Reinke, Todd Kirry and Reed Kirry ; seven sons and daughters in-law, 22 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased in 1994 by his wife, Josephine. A memorial service will be at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Saturday, October 10, 2008 beginning at 11 a.m.
