He married Mary Elizabeth Smith 28 Apr 1852 in Madison County, TN.

When Allen Goodman Gooch decided to become a physician, he became a matriculant at Jefferson College in Philadelphia, PA for the sessions of 1849/50 and 1851/52. In the 1850 interval, he read medicine in Williamson County with Dr. Shegog from Ireland.

He received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1852 with the title of his thesis being "Intermittent Fever."

Dr. Gooch practiced medicine in the Nolensville-Rock Springs area until the outbreak of the Civil War. On 28 November 1861 he enlisted as a Private in Co. F, 4th Tennessee ("Starne"s) Cavalry. He attained the rank of Assistant Surgeon of the regiment being appointed 25 May 1862 by Colonel J. W. Starnes, and was serving in this capacity 24 March 1864. He became ill with consumption and was relieved of his duties in the war. He returned to his home shortly before the war ended, so it is doubtful he became full surgeon of his regiment.Suggested edit:
