Wilbur was the youngest child of Henry Carl Pflanz and Agnes Curran.

He served in the Army during World War II, and saw action in the invasion of Sicily. He suffered from PTSD for several years after the war. He worked at the Cudahy meat packing plant in Wichita from 1946 to 1981.

He married Lucille Brown about 1954, and was the father of:
+ Sherry Lynne Pflanz.

Wilbur and Lucille were divorced about 1963, and he next married Julia Etta Glenn in 1965. They divorced about a year later.

Wilbur then married Billie Marie Caldwell, and adopted her four children from her previous marriage:
+ Detta Lunez,
+ Lavina Marie,
+ Sherrie Lee, and
+ Robert Lee Lester Pflanz.

Wilbur was a heavy smoker, and died of COPD at the age of 61.
