Hilda loved and appreciated music all of her life, serving for decades as the choir director at Pearce Baptist Church and later in the choir of her home and beloved Zebulon Baptist Church. It was not just the music that moved her heart, but it was the words, especially sacred hymns, that moved her soul. Her Christ-likeness will forever be a model for those she met, those she served, and those she loved. Her faith and following the narrow way were undeniable to those who knew her, and her witness and work were nothing less than remarkable.
Hilda is the daughter of the late Eula Pearl Lewis and Ralph Guy Lewis. She was preceded in death by her sister, Daphne Lewis Clark; her brother Durward Wilson Lewis, as her younger brother Ralph Guy Lewis, Jr. still resides in Myrtle Beach. Shortly after World War II, Hilda met Benny Laster Perry of Franklin County, a rowdy young man who had just returned from battles in Europe, and married him in 1947. Hilda, by Ben’s own admission, was a major spiritual influence in his life, causing him also to be rededicated to walking the narrow path that is right and good. He predeceased her by five years to the month. Hilda was always an inspiring blessing to her two children, Anelia Rose Perry Brady of Asheville and Frankie Laster Perry who currently resides by the home place at Perry’s Pond in Zebulon. She also leaves behind two granddaughters, three grandsons, five great-grandsons, and three great-granddaughters.
The family knows that one of her favorite songs was “In the Image of God,” and that is exactly the way she lived. Her life will be honored during an 11:00 am service at Zebulon Baptist Church, on Thursday January 5, 2017, preceded by visitation for those wishing to meet with the family in the church parlor beginning at 9:30 am. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
The family appreciates the unwavering care and love shown her by the staff of the Zebulon House, as well as the faithful professionals of Transitions Hospice. The family will also never forget the genuine and constant love and support of members of the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class and teachers, Ruth Moss and Pat Jenkins, and the Zebulon Baptist Church choir, especially its director, Barbara Glasgow. The family also appreciates the funeral services of Massey Funeral Home in Zebulon and its fine owner and staff.
