The son of Rufus T. and Betsey (Drake) Holmes of Mansfield, MA.

William was a 20-year-old Jeweler from Mansfield, when he enlisted at Dedham, MA on August 20, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. H. During his military service, William was, at times, assigned to assist the Hospital Steward, and, at other times, was acting Steward. He also performed duty as a cook for the Field Staff. He was mustered out of military service on Sept. 2, 1864 at the expiration of his three-year enlistment.

William resided in Foxboro, MA following his military service where he worked as a Hat Presser. He married Amanda Broad, then age 22 and the daughter of Horace and Maria Broad, at Foxboro on Feb. 28, 1867. There were no children born to the marriage. He joined the Charles W. Carroll G.A.R. Post No. 144 in Dedham on Nov. 24, 1871 and was suspended on Oct. 1, 1873. He was divorced from his wife Amanda and remarried to Lizze R. Emmons at Rochester, NH on June 8, 1887. They were the parents of a daughter, Edna Harriett, born Feb. 25, 1888 at Haverhill, MA.

He applied for an Invalid pension on August 21, 1890 and was issued benefits of $12 per month. In 1898 William was a resident of the National Soldier's Home, Virginia. William died of Tuberculosis at Amherst, N.H. on July 26, 1901, about three weeks after his arrival, and was buried at Meadow View Cemetery by the local G.A.R. Post.
