Son of George W. & Martha Ann (SMITH) ASHBURN, who married 06 MAY 1847 in Monroe County, Georgia. He appears George P. (aged 2 years) in his parents' 1850 census household in Upson County, Georgia, where they were operating a hotel. In 1860, the family appears to have been enumerated in two different households, one in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, and the other in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, where his father was a cotton broker. The son appears a Geo. B. in Marietta and George in Columbus (aged 12 years in both places).

George married 12 NOV 1878 in Washington, D.C., to Inda BROWNE. On the 1880 census of Washington, D.C., George (32 years of age, born in Georgia, both parents born in Georgia), a model maker, and his wife Inda ASHBURN (21, born in D.C., parents in VA) are in a household headed by his widowed mother Martha AHSBURN (50 GA GA GA), government clerk; also present are Martha's other children Martha (17) & Jeremiah (14).

On the 1910 census of Ward 33, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, George ASHBURN (55, born GA, both parents born GA), a night watchman, and wife Inda ASHBUN (51, born Washington, DC, both parent born VA) had been married 25 [sic] years; she had borne 2 children, 1 of whom was still living.
