Roy Kearns Boyles, 58, of 629 Villa Avenue, Front Royal, Virginia, died Friday, December 30, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Warren County Middle School auditorium beginning at 12:00 p.m., with a memorial service to honor Roy starting at 2:00 p.m.

Roy is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Sharon Chappell Boyles; daughter, Brittany Boyles Sager; daughter, Brandi Boyles Schindler and husband Kristopher; grandson, Grayson Sager; brother, David B. Boyles III and wife Debbie; sister, Aneita Bryant and husband David; sister, Janine Evans and husband John; mother-in-law, Arlene Chappell; five nieces; three nephews; eight great nephews; aunt, Joyce Ingram and uncle, Kenneth Ingram; and cousins, Cheryl Whitley and Gary Ingram.

Roy was predeceased by his father, David Bucie Boyles Jr. and mother, Elna aneita Kearns Boyles.

Roy was born on August 16, 1958 in Raleigh, North Carolina and moved with his family to Front Royal in 1964.

He attended Warren County Public Schools and graduated from Warren County High School in 1976. He attended Lord Fairfax Community College and the Institute for Financial Education.

After 21 years of service in the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue, Roy retired as a Master Deputy Commissioner III in 2015.

Family and friends meant the world to Roy. He thoroughly enjoyed spending every minute he could with them. He especially loved being a granddaddy. He was also an avid and talented golfer and bowler.

Roy distinguished himself through 37 years of involvement in educational, civic, and charitable organizations. Roy served on the Warren County School Board for 11 years and was Chairman of the Board for four years. He was named President of the Virginia School Boards Association in November 2012, after holding several leadership positions in the VSBA.

Roy's service to the community included membership and officer positions in the Front Royal Rotary Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Front Royal/Warren County Chamber of Commerce, the Warren Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, United Way of Front Royal/Warren County, and the Salvation Army of Front Royal/Warren County. He also served as a deacon at Marlow Heights Baptist Church.

For his service and leadership, Roy received the following awards: Outstanding Young Man of Front Royal/Warren County by the Front Royal Jaycees, The Citizen of the Year Award by the Front Royal/Warren County Chamber of Commerce (twice awarded), the Distinguished Citizen Award by the Shenandoah Area Council Boy Scouts of America, The Outstanding Service Award by the Front Royal Rotary Club, The Community Impact Award by the Chamber of Commerce, and The Bob Miller Award by the Rotary Club.

Roy will also be the first inductee to the Roy K. Boyles Wall of Recognition, which will be displayed in the Warren County School Board Office.

Before he left us, Roy referenced Mark Twain's quote, "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why."

Roy found meaning in his life by inspiring others to live a life of service, by spreading kindness and laughter, and most importantly, by being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, sibling, and friend.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Rotary Club of Front Royal.
