Shadd, Catherine Hill Stewart, 91, formerly of Barrington passed away September 14th. She was the widow of Robert W. Shadd, John A. Stewart and the mother of the late John A Stewart Jr. She was the daughter of the late Suzanne Carroll Bingham and the late Gen. John Phillip Hill and the stepdaughter of Sen. Hiram Bingham. She is survived by her son David and his wife Susan of Tiverton, her daughter-in-law Carol of Red Bank New Jersey and three grandsons, John Alexander, Charles and Peter.

Mrs. Shadd was a three-term member of the Barrington Town Council, serving as President for one term. She was active in numerous community activities. A past chairperson of Self-Help, the East Bay Community Action Agency; president of the Friends of Barrington Senior Citizens Center; former chairperson of the Barrington Elderly Housing Commission and a board member of the Bethany Home and Barrington Harbour Association. Mrs. Shadd served as chairperson of the Barrington Government Center Building Committee which renovated the former Peck School into the library and community center; a Trustee of the Barrington Public Library and a member of the Town Sewer Committee.

A delegate to the White House Conference on Libraries in 1979, the White House Conference of Aging in 1961 and she was Marshal of the Barrington Memorial Day Parade in 1983. She was a founder and first President of the Friends of the Barrington Public Library. She was a member of the DAR and a descendant of Chales Carroll of Carrollton, Maryland, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Mrs. Shadd had served as a Director of the R.I. State Council of Churches, a member of the National Cathedral Association, the League of Women Voters, Save the Bay and St. Andrew's School Corporation.

She served as Editor of the Barrington Times for 16 years, as president of the New England Press Association and was the Woman of the Year for Communications in R.I. in 1978.

A communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church, she served on the Vestry and Altar Guild. She was Director of Christian Education at St. John's for six years. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 AM at St. John's Episcopal Church 191 County Road, Barrington.
